This Information Model defines a high-level and protocol-agnostic ontology of the DestinE Platform.
The DestinE Platform Information Model offers and guarantees:
Following the WC3 OWL reference standard, the semantics of an information model is implemented by the following logical entities:
In Figure 1 we display the relationships between such semantic entities.
Figure 1: Semantic entities and relations overview.
Object properties relationships detail is given in Figure 2
Figure 2: Object properties relationships.
Data properties relationships detail is given in Figure 3
Figure 3: Data properties relationships.
In the following Sections, we detail our proposed information model applicable to the DestinE Platform.
This Information Model describes the fundamental concepts of the DestinE Platform, which constitutes an Ecosystem of services.
The DestinE Platform solution enables and ensures interoperability between its participants to share resources in a well-specified manner.
To maximise interoperability with external entities and among the services proposed on the platform, the definition of an information model
will support potential new Service Providers: in fact, the information model describes the key concepts to achieve this goal,
remaining agnostic to the specific implementation details of each participant.
Following the approach of International Data Spaces Association, the overall view can be divided into logical groups of concepts (hereinafter called facets), addressing different static and dynamic aspects of the DestinE Platform. Most of the facets are named after the key concept they represent.
Facets of DestinE Platform and their interactions are shown in Figure 4 and described hereafter.
Figure 4: DestinE Platform Facets
In the following Sections, each Facet is depicted in detail. Facets names will be reported in brackets.
The Participant facet comprehends the data, application, service and infrastructure providers and consumers
of DestinE Platform, allowed to pool together resources to create more business value, efficient resource usage, reducing costs and the
duplication of efforts made towards a common goal.
A Participant is a legal or natural person assuming a role (or more than one role) in DestinE Platform framework.
A Participant can be an organization (or organizational unit) or an individual. If the Participant is an individual (Person),
he or she may assume a specific role in the corresponding organization. The Participant concept may indicate the type of business
and the domain in which operates.
Each Participant can be assigned to one or more unambiguously defined sites. Site information comprises the name and address
of the site as well as geo-location information. It is particularly important in cases in which specific rules (e.g., national law)
apply, affecting, for example, the data usage control policy. Pending the publication of the architectural principles of the European SIMPL Initiative, four types of actors, briefly summarized, are considered as follows:
The Resource facet encompasses the building blocks to enable the exchange of data and applications.
The Platform offers data consumers the means to access different types of data from different providers, enabling
interoperability between providers and consumers. The facet contains the services to share as well as managed data
and applications, and perform basic analysis. It encompasses the ‘SIMPL Data Layer’.
A Resource Class is defined and identified as an abstract concept covering what can be provided and/or
consumed in the framework of the DestinE Platform.
Principal resources are Data Resource, Applications, Services, and Cloud Resources as well – this latter belonging to the Infrastructure facet.
A Data Resource is an identifiable, valuable, digital (non-physical) commodity exchanged among Participants by means of DestinE Platform Services. Data Reosources can be:
The Infrastructure facet allows DestinE Platform users to discover, utilize, and manage infrastructure services offered by infrastructure providers.
It corresponds to the SIMPL Infrastructure Layer and depicts the dependencies and interactions between the different infrastructure building blocks on a high level.
The Classes belonging to this facet enable DestinE Platform users to easily find and provision the necessary computing and storage resources to execute their workloads in a secure and energy-efficient way.
This facet allows the DestinE Platform to connect to third-party infrastructure services, such that Participants can execute Services on them. DestinE Platform offers a Runtime Platform
(PaaS) to hosts its Core services and optionally new onboarded or federated services – relying on OVH Cloud Resources (IaaS and CaaS). They comprehend:
Computing Instances, Storage, Network Database, Container services, Data and AI.
The Class for HPC refers to DestinE Platform capacity to address Multi-cloud and HPC infrastructure providers, for example adding new external resources from HPC operators
- designed to support the execution of compute-intensive tasks.
As in the first phase of DestinE Platform no other cloud provider nor HPC is foreseen, these capacities will not be used in the current stage, however it is important to highlight
how the platform will be able to handle these requirements at later stages.
Security capabilities are constantly active. The agreed level of security encryption and integrity on every data transmission or service deployment,
granted for the consumer at any time, are traced thanks to specific data properties of the infrastructure components.
The Interaction facet vertically spans the Resource and Infrastructure ones. Covering the SIMPL ‘Administration’
and ‘Governance’ layers, it provides services that are required for the well-functioning of all the other facets, as well as
the DestinE Platform as a whole. These services are the Platform Management Services, explicitly reported as sub-Classes of DestinE Platform Service class
– which implements pillars functions such as security, identification and access control, monitoring, and more.
Among them, the Identification & Authorization Management (IAM) Service manages and validates the digital identity of DestinE Platform Participants.
Related to the security capabilities, the functions gathered by IAM Service will be constantly required whenever an end user or a provider
accesses DestinE Platform Services. In this sense, every relation of the user with service or infrastructure provisioning is closely screened
by the IAM Service – ensuring identification, authentication and authorization. Client and relevant Client Role, configurable via
IAM Service, are identified – while identity management is linked to Person class.
The Service Registry catalogues all applications, services, data and software available for re-use by Third-Party users. The DestinE Platform Core Services,
The Service Registry catalogues all applications, services, data and software available for re-use by Third-Party users. The DestinE Platform Core Services,
Onboarded Services and Federated Services are reported. Moreover, it establishes a public procedure to manage DestinE Platform Services onboarding.
Following the procedure, potential Service Providers, eager to register their own applications and services, will be supported
in the onboarding activity and resource integration.
The Information Dissemination & Onboarding Support service takes care of the DestinE Platform Web Portal, the entry point for users approaching to DestinE Platform,
as well as of the related user experience and community engagement activities. The website is where users log in to have access to DestinE Platform Services, and where
a Support Page allows them to raise User Support request – by both a logged-in user and a not-logged one. The help request will be redirected to the Ticketing System,
on the Jira platform, and will be taken over by the Service Desk. The Service Desk is available for users to interact with DestinE Platform and Community
by submitting issues, support and/or information request, and has the responsibility to manage the relevant ticketing system.
Moreover, it oversees user feedbacks analysis and reporting relevant to user support handling and services (see Feedback Class).
The Service Desk will also take care of the interaction with the DestinE elements and/or third-party application services as part of the anomaly and maintenance management processes.
The User Support Team will raise internal tickets for specific Issues, e.g., when they discover anomalies or faults in the system or want to share suggestions on improvements
for workflows or processes.
So, not only user support requests are tracked in the Ticketing System, but all the issues that can be raised by DestinE Platform stakeholders (users and internal teams).
Specific projects (see Ticketing System Project) have been defined in JIRA to manage each Issue Type (see Issue data property):
Anomaly; User Request; Operational Anomaly; Story; SPR; Maintenance Request; Security Incident; Change Request.
The Clearing House records the transaction received by each Service, relevant to active users. Information relevant to a Transaction,
the Service that allows it and the Participant who performs it are stored as transaction data into the Clearing House
Transaction Class collect information relevant to transactions, i.e. a completed event, that can be allowed by a Service. Indeed, completed event implies a correct operation
provided to a Person, specifically an Active Users, i.e., individual or service accounts who have registered with DestinE Platform and utilize DestinE Platform services to access resources within
a time interval. Active user concept is traced in the relevant object property.
Events, i.e., any occurrence that is relevant to a service, are stored and aggregated by the Monitoring Service to monitor DestinE Platform Services, Cloud Resources
and Runtime Platform performances, aggregated into Statistics, to provide up-to-date Reports of the achieved operations performances.
Monitoring Service is also in charge of the computation of KPIs.
The Regulation facet includes also concepts underlying business interactions among the DestinE Platform Participants, i.e. the interchange and consumption of Resources
according to defined Regulations.
Main Classes included in this facet are Rules, Actions and Contracts.
The Rules specify Actions that an involved Participant is obliged, permitted or prohibited to perform with respect to Resource. An Action is associated with the Resource via the action property in a Rule.
The Rule provides the specific interpretations of the Action. For example: an Action is permitted to be exercised on the target Resource when related to a Permission. When related to a Prohibition,
the Action indicates the operation that is prohibited to be exercised on the target Resource. When related to a Duty, the Action indicates the agreed operation that is obligatory to be fulfilled by a Participant.
A Contract express Permissions, Prohibitions and Duties related to the usage of Resource. It defines a validity Period and formal Rules agreed upon by Participants involved in the provision, or subsequent usage of the Resource.
Contracts formalize the expectations on behaviour of involved Participants in a declarative, technology-agnostic way.
The perpetual control and enforcement of such specification level policies may involve the inception of governance processes or, when appropriate the deployment of a technological solution.
